This 8th century BC escape offers a perfect getaway from 21st century life. Wind down without your phone ringing, TV blaring and work stresses weighing you down. Upcott is perfect for a romantic break, a little family getaway or a weekend chilling out with your friends!
This family run retreat is the perfect remote hideaway. The Cole family are very welcoming, showing us everything we needed to know about our home for the next 3 days. Your whole stay is very private with no interference. As soon as we arrived we were welcomed by a roaring fire, fresh eggs and even some homemade chocolate brownies! Upcott Roundhouse was a real family effort, with all the family lending a helping hand to construct the roundhouse. Upcott was inspired by the father’s love of history, built on the land awarded to the Cole’s ancestors 25 generations ago by William the Conqueror.
The Cole family offers a full range of services from cooking a lovely beef or chicken casserole with jacket potatoes(cooked by the mother) for your arrival to baby sitting services, the nanny being their own daughter!
As soon as you close the roundhouse doors you are transported back to another world! It’s hard to put into words the effort and detail that has gone into constructing this authentic hideaway. With the thatched roof, no windows and the roaring heath you spend all your time in front of the open fire, just like your ancestors. Each evening is spent playing board games, story telling and cooking, roasting your dinner on the big spit above the open fire. You soon become bewitched by the aroma of wood smoke!
Inside the roundhouse you will find a hand built rustic wooden four poster bed decorated in plush cushions and thick woolen blankets. Perfect for a honeymoon! A large dinning table equipped with wooden benches, modern kitchen provisions like a kettle, candles, unlimited fire wood, solar powered plugs and a mini roundhouse containing a hot shower, basin and a compost loo (it won’t take you long to get used to it). All that lovely wooden furniture reminded us of the sheesham wood furniture, dark mango wood furniture, light mango wood furniture we sell in our furniture shop in Bournemouth….
At night it felt like star gazing in my own planetarium! With no light pollution around this truly is the best place I’ve ever been for encountering shooting stars. Me and my family sat outside for a long time watching the stars in a amazement, all our troubles just seemed to be carried away with the stars shooting across the night sky.
I often felt like a character off Game of Thrones, staying at Upcott, be the master or mistress of this Iron Age fortress! What I loved about this escape was the family time, with no distractions we all had a great time together. Playing games till midnight, everyone getting involved to cook the dinner and taking family strolls in the rolling Devon countryside surrounding the round house. If you want some quality time with the family this is the perfect escape! We didn’t want to leave the Iron Age oasis.This retreat is all about relaxing and feeling rejuvenated. It’s an oasis away from the hassle of the 21st century.
